1. Where is Phi Phi Island?

Phi Phi Island is the collective name for a small archipelago in Krabi Province, lie on the south west of Krabi coastline. It consists of 6 main islands: Koh Phi Phi Don, Koh Phi Phi Leh, Bamboo Island (Ko Mai Phai), Mosquito Island (Koh Yung), Koh Bida Nok and Koh Bida Nai.

The two main islands here are Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh. Phi Phi Don which is the larger island, attracts tons of visitors to stay on its lovely shores. The smaller uninhabited Phi Phi Leh is still undeveloped and protected by their National Park status. It hosts stunningly beautiful bays and beaches, including the world-famous Maya Bay, which became widely known after The Beach was filmed here.

2. How do you get to Phi Phi Island?

It’s just 45-minute speedboat trip or a 90-minute ferryboat ride from either Phuket or Krabi, these picture postcard islands offer the ultimate tropical getaway.

From Phuket to Phi Phi Island

There are two ways to Koh Phi Phi island from Phuket which are ferry and speedboat. Ferries take about two hours from Phuket charging at 390 baht per person. The main departure/arrival port is at Rassada Pier which is one-hour drive from Phuket Airport. Speedboats costs around 900 baht but only takes 50 minutes. To get good seats you should arrive well in advance in high season or half an hour before departure in low season.

Below is Phuket – Phi Phi Ferry schedule:

From Krabi to Phi Phi Island

Same as Phuket, there is only speedboats or ferry to take you to Phi Phi Island. It takes 90 minutes to reach, costs around 300 baht. In Krabi, the main ferry pier is Klong Jirad Pier, situated just south of Krabi Town and it is 30 minutes away from Krabi Airport. Speedboat is faster, which takes 45 minutes. Its charging can up to 1500 baht for a boat.

Below is the Krabi – Koh Phi Phi Ferry schedule for your reference:

If you’re staying in Phuket/Krabi and just want to head out to the Phi Phi Island for a day-trip, you can buy an all-inclusive tour. It can be a great way to see a larger area and more islands within a shorter timescale. However, do be aware that you will have to pay an extra National Park fee which is collected by the park ranger and cannot be included in the all-inclusive price.

Everyone is required to pay this 20 baht tax fee to help keep the island beautiful. You can’t leave the ferry dock without paying, don’t even bother trying.

3. When to Go to Ko Phi Phi?

The climate in Phi Phi is similar to that of Phuket or Krabi. Peak season in Phi Phi is from November to April. The weather is comparatively cooler and pleasant with occasional light to heavy showers. If you travel during May through October, you’ll avoid peak season and save quite a bit of money (even though you might catch some rain).

4. Phi Phi Island Travel Costs

Phi Phi Island is one of the most expensive islands in Thailand. As it is two-hour boat ride from the mainland so expect a little more expensive prices in the supermarket than onshore. This also applies to accommodation. They have to cover their larger costs or running the accommodation.

5. Where to Stay in Phi Phi Island

Only one island of the group of six – Koh Phi Phi Don – offers accommodation choices. Still, there are a great variety of destinations in Phi Phi to fit your tastes.

From the lively central village to the tranquil yet convenient Long Beach, to the remote and secluded resorts of Phi Phi Don’s southeastern coast to the luxurious and peaceful Laem Thong, there is a right place to stay for everyone.

6. Things to Do in Phi Phi Islands

1. Koh Phi Phi Leh & Maya Bay

Take a long tail boat or a scheduled tour to Koh Phi Phi Ley to see Maya Bay. This is where The Beach was actually filmed and it’s stunning. However, Maya Bay was closed for tourists starting on the 1st of June 2018. It was just announced recently that Maya Bay will begin welcoming tourists again as early as November 2020.

Now, all boats have to stop 600 feet (200 meters) away from the beach. So seeing the famous beach is still possible. They almost always have snorkeling gear on their longtail boats or speedboats, which means that snorkeling near Maya Bay is possible as well.

2. Phi Phi View Point

Koh Phi Phi Don has an unusual shape – like an ‘H’ – with its main village built on the horizontal bar, hike up to the famous Phi Phi Viewpoint and admire the island from up above is something must do here. The hike is short and sweet, it roughly takes between 20 and 40 minutes to get there on a well-trodden and paved path. At the top, there’s a snack/ beverage stand and a few tables to enjoy the view.

3. Diving in Phi Phi

Diving is one of the prime activities in Phi Phi and the island counts a large number of serious and professional diving course. From Disvover Scuba Diving to Divemaster – and day trips to the many world-class dive sites available in and around Phi Phi waters. Go scuba diving with one of the many dive companies on the island.

4. Rock climbing

Tonsai Tower, located at the western end of Tonsai Bay, is the rock climbers’ heaven in Phi Phi. This 200m tall limestone tower hosts 48 different bolted routes featuring all levels of difficulty from beginner to experienced climber. There are always no lack of choice of professional and serious companies propose courses and half or full day tours; their climbing instructors are trained to the highest safety standards.

5. Hop aboard a booze cruise

While there is nightlife aplenty if you are looking at getting out on the water while enjoying some rum punch, Captain Bob’s is something you should go for. Partygoers and groups of friends can enjoy a fun activity and at the same time discover the most beautiful sites of Phi Phi Islands – Maya Bay, Monkey Beach, Loh Samah, Wang Long Cove, and Pi-Leh Bay.

Departing at 13:00 from Tonsai Bay, the cruise visits all the places mentioned above and features snorkelling, fishing, kayaking, cliff jumping, and monkey feeding.

6. Enjoy night life here!

This is where Koh Phi Phi shines. Nightlife here is crazy. Fire shows and Thai boxing matches are a regular occurrence at the beach bars. Nearly every night of the week, there are massive beach parties.

  • The Reggae Bar – a classic when it comes to Koh Phi Phi nightlife. Bar goers can voluntarily “fight” one another in a boxing ring which makes for great entertainment.
  • Slinky Bar is a nightclub on the beach and it’s the perfect place to unwind and let loose. The music is ridiculously loud, people dance wildly inappropriate, and there’s local fire dancers!
  • Banana Rooftop Bar is just like it sounds. It’s a bamboo hut type bar that is located on top of a Mexican restaurant. The vibe is super laid back with live music, video games, and special “cigarettes” that can be purchased.

Friendly reminder: Partying is not cheap here and is one of the reasons people end up spending too much money!
