Top 15 Must-Go Pastry Cafes In KL – 2020

It is a must to visit cafes when you’re in Malaysia, especially in Kuala Lumpur. Why? Because Malaysia is great for food and Malaysians love going to cafes to lepak (hangout).

In this article, I will be recommending not only normal cafes for coffee but in particular – cafes with amazing pastries! Pastries are great for breakfast, brunch or dessert, suitable for anytime of the day.

1. The Hyacinth Cafe

The Hyacinth Cafe specialises in unique flavoured cakes and other sweet and savoury treats. It is owned by Yani Othman, a self-taught baker whom also conduct workshops and baking classes. Things about café, it’s always instagrammable. Of course, you won’t be disappointed in The Hyacinth Café, not only the pastries are mouth-watering but you can also take great photos!

Other than that, their menu is rotated in a regular basis. Hence, you’ll always be surprised with what they offer. Their pastries, cakes are so delicious that it’s often sold out early.

For sourdough lovers, The Hyacinth offers sourdough loafs. They usually bake it in a small portion, make sure to give a call to avoid any disappointment.

These doughnuts are so pretty and inviting! Just take a look at the doughnuts’ filling oozing out, yummy!

Rose Pistachio Cake is one of their signature and bestselling cakes. I can’t give you any reason on why you should not try it. Do look out for Pandan Gula Melaka cake too!

3. Croisserie

Croisserie Artisan Bakery specializes in European pastries with a wide variety of choices. Their pastries are loved by many as it is baked with the finest ingredients to create palatable and succulent pastries. Not only that, their cafes are designed aesthetically which creates a cosy and comfortable environment for you to enjoy.

Crosserie offers a variety selection of pastries and as any other bakery or patisserie, they have their own signature pastries. You have to try their croissants – no matter butter, almond or chocolate, it’s equally good. Other than that, you should try their crusty butter cake, baguette, quiche, sourdough and Caneles de Bordeaux – French vanilla cake.

Even our own Malaysian celebrity chef, Chef Wan paid a visit to their café. Their pastries must be heavenly good for Chef Wan to dine in their café.

Looking for savoury authentic French bread and pastries, visit Maison Des Pains. This café is absolutely a gem, the design is elegant and modern. Besides, it offers various breads and pastries, smells good and taste better.

If you’re looking for a unique croissant, this is the one – Black Truffle Croissant with Black Truffle Cream Cheese.

A small French pastry with vanilla, soft and tender center and dark, thick caramelized crust – Canele

Chocolate lover? Try this rich chocolate ganache paired with an outer layer of crispy danish. Yummy!

Honestly, even looking at their interior design has already attracted me to dine in. It’s surrounded with lush greenery and natural terrazzo stones – inspired by the nature. Dew Rustic Apple Tart – Almond frangipane, apple slices, butter and sugar with a beautiful homemade puff pastry

You might be shocked with this – Basil Lime Tart, might sound like a weird combination but it’s perfectly balanced and delicious.

Hazelnut Paris Brest – crunchy choux pastry with a thick and creamy hazelnut cream with roasted hazelnut. It’s so pretty and cute! (also, out of this world)

The Bread Shop located at Bukit Damansara offers a good range of pastries with a classic yet modern bakery décor. Of course, what matters the most are the pastries that will make you drool!

Kenny Hills Bakers started off as a small bakery and now they’ve expanded to 3 locations where you can get their amazing pastries. Their pastries and bread are baked daily to make sure their quality matches your expectation. Below are some staple items you must-get in Kenny Hills Bakers.

Hot cross buns – just like its name, it is one of the hot buns you must get. Simple yet tasty.

Blueberry Danish – just take a look at those huge blueberries, you’ll be able to get a mouthful of blueberry juice with every bite.

Peach strudel – the pastry is super crispy and flaky paired with fresh peaches and cream in between makes a wonderful strudel.

8. Dotty’s Pastries & Coffee

Dotty’s Pastries & Coffee is well known for artisanal pastries, breads and cakes, they’re unique and will definitely get your cravings fixed.

An irresistible cronut – salted egg yolk cronut, flaky on the outside while on the inside it’s full of salted egg filling with a generous amount of glazed on top of the cronut.

Their Nutella cruffin is a must to try if you love Nutella and pastry, it’s the best from both worlds. They too offer various croissants such as chocolate and peanut butter. Unique and delicious!

9. Paul Bakery Malaysia

Paul Bakery is a French Family Bakery and Patisserie which was established in 1889 and brought to Malaysia in 2017. Their interior design features a modern French-style, classy and elegant.

Try out their croissants – classic yet yummy and apple turnover – amazing crispy and flaky layers, taste perfect with the filling and caramelized sweet crust.

Their strawberry tartlet is amazing, it’s filled with vanilla custard cream topped with fresh strawberries with a sweet shortcrust pastry.

They offer different flavoured éclairs such as strawberry and chocolate. All are delicious with the filling in between the light and airy pastry.

10. Der Backmeister

Der Backmeister is a German bakery, they do not use ready mixes, preservatives or the usual premixes for baking. They ensure that their pastries are of quality, baked with traditional craftsmanship with loads of passion. Besides the outlet at TTDI, they also have an outlet at Ampang, Selangor.

Apple strudel is a must-try! A thin sheet of filled dough, rolled and baked to perfection, yummy!

You’ll have to try the custard danish too! Just look at the golden custard on top of the baked-to-perfection pastry.

Huckleberry’s interior provides you with a cosy and comfortable environment. Not only a good environment but good pastries as well. Their croissants are heavenly and loved by many.

Are you a fan of Nutella? If yes, you’ll love this Nutella croissant, just look at how sexy it is! If you’re saying no, well, you’ll fall in love once you try this croissant.

Try out their new pastry – caramelized onion swirl, layers of goodness with aromatic caramelized onion.

12. Lisette’s Café & Bakery

Lisette’s Café & Bakery provide a cosy retreat surrounded by unique artwork, nature elements and scent of baking pastries as warm as a blanket in a cold winter. They have another outlet located at Subang Jaya, Selangor. Their pastries are all equally good but I’ll include a few if you’re indecisive (like me) when it comes to food.

Le Pont means “The Bridge” in French. The name is created as they want to be a place where gaps are bridged and ideas are connected over good food and drinks. They serve affordable and good cinnamon roll, if you’re a big fan of cinnamon, don’t miss it.

Kouign Amann – this is a must-try, don’t ask just get this 😉

Croissant – at this point, I’ll have to tell you that it’s worth to try croissant in every bakery or patisserie because the classics never disappoint.

Mille-Feuille, a classic French flaky pastry. They have different flavours available for a good creamy yet crunchy pastry.

Try out their curd-based tart with a choice of lemon or passionfruit. It’s appetizing with the choice of flavours combined with a crunchy soft outer layer, makes it a perfect tart. 

Encore is a unique patisserie as they serve high tea set. You’ll get to try a selection of delicious pastries including their signatures. Note that it is only available on Friday to Sunday from 12pm to 6pm.
