In Phuket and feel like you’re in the mood to hike and see some monkeys? Look no further, because Monkey Hill should fulfil all of those criteria!

Also known as Khao Toh Sae Hill, Monkey Hill is considered to belong to one of the highest hills in Phuket. The view from the peak that overlooks the town of Phuket is mesmerizing too. However, be prepared to do a lot of walking while being accompanied by quirky and mischievous monkeys! Nevertheless, being able to see monkeys on your way up should make it very interesting.

Getting There

  • Bus: Hop onto a public bus either from Kata Beach, Karon Beach or Patong that can take you to Phuket Town. Drop-off at a bus stop near the Fountain Circle, located 2.5 kilometres away from the base of Monkey Hill. From there, either walk, ride a tuk-tuk or a taxi to Monkey Hill.
  • Car: Taxi, tuk-tuk or private cars can be driven to the hill’s peak. However, there are time restrictions to doing this; from 7:00AM – 8:00AM, and 4:00PM – 7:00PM, vehicles are not allowed to drive up the hill, therefore you’re still encouraged to walk up the hill to view the beautiful sunrise and sunset views.

So, what are the best times to visit Monkey Hill, you ask? Generally, people who frequent the place recommend being there in the early morning hours of 7:00AM to 8:00AM, since traffic is not congested during those times and the weather is also cooling. If you can’t make it for the sunrise or morning jog at Monkey Hill, try to make it to catch the sunset views in the evening.

What to do at Monkey Hill?

#1: Watching the monkeys, of course!

From cute baby monkeys to the mischievous adult monkeys, these wild monkeys are spread throughout the hill, so it’s obvious to say that you’ll be seeing them around everywhere. These agile creatures are not afraid of people, because they’ve been visited by humans for a very long time. Trust me – they’ll even climb on your shoulders and head just for a little snack!

Here are a few tips to make your interactions with the monkeys a little easier (and safer):

  • These wild monkeys CAN bite, so do be careful not to provoke them if they look agitated.
  • Do not be fooled by their “cute” appearance. When feeling threatened, they may become defensive and will attack.
  • Try to have a few snacks (fruits, bread, nuts, etc.) with you to make approaching them a little easier.
  • Do not show them the bulk of food that you have, they may follow you and snatch it away when you least expect it.
  • Be careful of your personal belongings, ie. water bottles, canned drinks, etc.
  • Mother monkeys are very protective of their babies, so do not try to make them angry as they might take it as you wanting to harm their baby.
  • Do not give the monkeys anything made out of plastic (for littering and in case they ingest it).
  • Always feed the monkeys with an open palm – they’ll come closer!

#2: Snapping your perfect shots!

Whether it be pictures of the monkeys you see along the path of walking uphill, or even at the peak of the hilltop where you’ll oversee the town and magnificent sunset view, the possibilities of taking photogenic shots are endless. Have fun snapping memorable shots along to show off to your loved ones on social media or when you get home.

#3: Sunset watching

Catch a glimpse of the sun shyly hiding behind the clouds from the hilltop, also known as the Khao Toh-Sae viewpoint, and watch the bustling town below your feet. If you want to capture the moment, do get your photo-taking devices ready!

We can’t leave out on the essential items you should bring!

Wondering what you should bring on your way up to Monkey Hill? We’ve got you covered:

  • Water – it’s very important to stay hydrated! We recommend bringing it from home since there are only two known shops available on the hill.
  • Bananas, nuts, bread, etc. – these are the monkeys’ snacks to fill their tummies!
  • Comfortable shoes – as you will be hiking up a long trail, it is important to have comfortable and suitable footwear to avoid accidents.
  • Camera and smartphones – for your photo-taking needs.
  • Medicines/first-aid – if you’ve been scratched or bitten by the monkeys, or even if you may suddenly feel unwell, it is better to have an emergency kit stashed in your backpack.
  • Mosquito repellant – to keep those annoying mosquitoes away from biting you!

Overall, this is an excellent place commended by both tourists and locals in Phuket. A great place to create memories with kids, friends and couples alike, Monkey Hill is a must-visit place, even if you’re not an avid hiker! Add Monkey Hill to your travel itinerary for an interesting and memorable holiday experience in Phuket.
